1. Northwoods Newcomer Marker
Inscription. The red oak is a relative newcomer. It expanded its range from the south following the retreat of the great ice sheet 13,000 years ago.

This majestic tree began life about 1890. Like other red oaks, it bears inch-long, flat-topped acorns. Wild turkeys favor the bitter nuts. If you are quiet, you may see a turkey at Peninsula. Turkeys did not live here for at least 100 years. In 1991, biologists released wild turkeys in southern Door County.
