1. Battery Guy Howard, 1906 Marker

Inscription. This structure was built to mount two 6-inch rifles. These guns were mounted on an ingenious disappearing carriage, which would drop down behind the wall after firing so that they could be reloaded. After loading, a large weight would raise the gun above the wall again for firing.

This battery was named in honor of Major Guy Howard, who was killed in action in the Philippine Islands on October 22, 1899. Due to a manpower shortage, gunnery practice was not held here until August 1916. However, in October 1917, the gun barrels were shipped to France for use as heavy artillery.
