Inscription. This structure was built in response to the Spanish American War. It had two mounted 8-inch guns. The structure was completely rebuilt in 1901 to mount two 3-inch rapid fire guns. These light weight guns would protect the mine fields in the north channel. The guns were declared obsolete in 1920 and removed. The US Navy built a wooden "Harbor Entrance Post" tower over the center gun emplacement in 1943. The concrete columns on the right were part of the Primary Mine Control Station. This was a two-story frame building built in 1908. The small concrete building on the left was built in 1911 and housed the gas engines and generators which powered all the north end combat structures.
