1. Fort Dade Mine Wharf Marker
Inscription. From 1898 to 1921, the Army planned to defend Tampa Bay by planting two lines of mines in each shipping channel, for a total of 84 mines. The concrete wharf was built to handle the mining operations in both the North and Southwest channels. It was connected to other mine buildings by a small gauge railroad. When the wharf was built, the water was 21 feet deep at the end. Since then the beach has shifted outward.

It can be reached from Anderson Boulevard (Florida Route 679) 1½ miles west of Pinellas Bayway South, on the left when traveling west. The marker is located on Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge and State Park and can only be reached by boat or ferry. The ferry departs from the bay pier within Fort De Soto Park. Touch for map.
