The current DCB-24 rotating beacon replaced this beacon. in September 1989. The lighthouse is now fully automated and the U.S. Coast Guard no longer needs to daily tend the light. The Coast Guard crew that once cared for the light and grounds were transferred off the island.
The U.S. Coast Guard retains ownership and maintenance of the Lighthouse. However, the Florida Park Service now manages the Key as a state park.
