Sojourner Truth
Abolitionist, evangelist, author and women's rights activist Sojourner Truth spoke on our courthouse steps in the spring of 1861 during her stay in Steuben County, Indiana.
This sculpture by artist Jim Haire is a tribute to the Indiana Women's Suffrage Centennial. On Sunday, June 6, 2021, a celebration was held here commemorating Truth's contribution to the women's rights movement after a week of related festivities. In attendance were city, county and state officials, guests from across the nation, community members and some of Sojourner Truth's descendants. This project was made possible through Indiana Humanities; Preserving Women's Legacy Grant, Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs, First Federal Savings Bank of Angola, Steuben County Commissioners and Angola Main Street / Downtown Angola Coalition and committee.
