Mooresville Notables. . , W.N. Johnston and Sons Co. , In the late 1800s and early 1900s W.N. Johnston and Sons Co. owned and operated seven stores on Broad St. just across from the train depot. Nat Johnston's grocery store was considered the "finest" grocery store in town at the time. You'll recognize the inside of this building today at 106 N. Broad St., McNeely Livery , Captain Carmi Kilpatrick McNeely, moved into town around the time of incorporation and with his brother Burgess Wilson McNeely, opened a livery stable. The building still stands nearby at 128 North Broad Street., The Mooresville Co-operative Creamery , In 1914 the Mooresville Co-operative Creamery was started to provide a local market for area dairy farmers. In 1924 the Mooresville Ice Cream Company was spun off from the creamery as a separate business. You can still enjoy a taste of their DeLuxe Ice Cream at 172 N. On it you will find the likeness of the only 3 term President of the United States of America, Franklin D. Roosevelt. But who was the artist who fashioned his likeness that graces our national currency? It was Mooresville native, Dr. Selma Burke, an American woman descended from slaves. Born in Mooresville on December 31, 1900. In 1944 she was commissioned to sculpt the likeness of the President of the United States. It was unveiled in 1945, after his death, by President Harry Truman.
