Inscription.
This dugout canoe is similar to the many canoes one would find plying Florida waterways late 19th - early 20th century. Lighthouse archaeologists identified and recovered this historic dugout canoe from the St. Augustine Alligator Farm, where it served as a haven for alligator trainers, if the animals became aggressive.

Right - This photograph from the early 20th century shows a canoe of surprisingly similar construction to the one on display. Despite the similarities, no definitive proof exists that they are the same vessel.

Left - Lighthouse archaeologists examine the dugout canoe at the Alligator Farm in preparation for moving it to a secure location, protected from further deterioration. This process involved assessing the canoe's condition and identifying any weak spots. This allowed the archaeologists to develop and execute a plan for safely moving the fragile canoe.
