A: Older children had to know how to operate the Lighthouse in case of illness or injury to the keepers. They also helped keep the Light Station grounds tidy. Wilma Daniels helped her father, Keeper Cardell Daniels, tend offshore navigational buoys. Her brother Leroy had a paper route. Her other brother, nicknamed Cracker, would roam the island for bird and turtle eggs for their mother's baking.
