Extraordinary Gift
Maymont was created by James Henry and Sallie May Dooley, who lived here from 1893 to 1925. James Dooley was the son of Irish immigrants, and he built a fortune in railroads, real estate and other ventures. Mrs. Dooley, a descendant of old Virginia families, was an avid gardener, a writer and active member of the community. Their beautiful estate—named for a combination of Mrs. Dooley's maiden name and the French word for hill—was a showplace perched high above the James River that reflected the opulence and extravagance of the Gilded Age.

Dooleys gave us the extraordinary gift of Maymont to enjoy as a park and museum, and their legacy has inspired familiar acts of kindness over many decades. Donors have funded additions like the animal habitats, renovations and general operations to make sure that Maymont enriches the lives of all its guests and remains open to everyone.

The majority of Maymont's funding comes from those who love it—individual contributors like you. The Dooleys did not provide an endowment, so your support is vital to help this public treasure thrive today and into the future.
