Bald Eagles
Conservation
Though eagles are at the top of the food chain, they still have one serious threat: humans. They cannot survive too close to people because they need large trees for their nests and peace and quiet to raise their young.
Habitat destruction, poaching, and dangerous chemicals like the insecticide DDT devastated bald eagle populations in the past. Though DDT was eventually banned, for two decades it did immense harm to bald eagles by making their eggshells thin and weak. In the 1970s, people were shocked to discover this beautiful bird was nearly extinct, and it was given special government protection under the Endangered Species Act.
On June 28, 2007, the bald eagle was removed from the list of endangered species. This is reason to celebrate, however it is still a protected bird and we must all work to keep our national symbol off the list for future generations.
