Belvedere Tiburon in Marin County, California — The American West (Pacific Coastal)
A Golden Port
If California ever becomes a prosperous country, this bay will be the center of its prosperity.
Richard Henry Dana
Two Years Before the Mast, 1835
Thirteen years after Danas visit, the discovery of gold in the Sierra Nevada foothills started San Francisco on the road to riches. The city quickly became the center of shipping and commerce on the Pacific Coast. Key to the citys prosperity was the bay itself --- gateway to the states rich interior and a natural harbor wide enough to accommodate hundreds of ships. Today the San Francisco Bay Area continues to prosper from this scenic yet useful arrangement of land and sea.
