Inscription. In the Middle Ages this flower was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It was called Our Lady's mantle because the lobes of the leaves resemble the scalloped edges of a woman's shawl, cloak or mantle. The dew drops that collected on the leaves of the plant were considered holy water, which would cleanse a person of all illness. In Italy it is known as Madonna Mantello, or the Madonna's cloak.
