1. Jessie Bloom Marker
Jessie Bloom came to Fairbanks from Ireland in 1912 and was married to Robert Bloom.
Back in Ireland she had been an active member of the Women's Freedom League and she believed in equal rights for women and men.
In 1916 she was active in a temperance organization known as the "Fourth Division Drys" that was instrumental in the passage of the Alaska Bone Dry law.
By 1921 Jessie had school-age daughters and that led her to establish the first school in Alaska that taught the Montessori method. Jessie also founded the first Girl Scout Troop in Alaska, which was no surprise since she was a Girl Guide back in Dublin.
In the 1970's Jessie was featured in a poster advertising New Balance athletic shoes. It shows her wearing a fur coat, hat and bright blue athletic shoes. Across the bottom, it says "When the going gets tough, the tough get going."
