1. Wilderness Guardians Marker
" if they don't sent in a warden pretty soon their won't be anything left to warden."
-Local Alaskan guide Harry Karstens in a letter to friend and conservationist Charles Sheldon, 1920. Karstens was hired as the Park's first superintendent in 1921.
"It is especially important that there be enough cabins along the main trail through the park to enable the rangers to reach them in one days travel. The regular winter freighting is often delayed by weather that is unfit for even the dogs to spend the night in the open."

Inspired by the areas wildlife and grand vistas you see before you, conservationist Charles Sheldon spearheaded the movement to create Mt. McKinley National Park. His vision became reality in 1917.
Slow construction of the park road prompted the building of several cabins near the route. The cabins originally housed summer road construction crews. Later, they provided much needed shelter as "relief cabins" for rangers patrolling the park by dogsled and on snowshoes.

In 1926, Rangers Grant Pearson and Al Winn peeked inside the newly constructed Sanctuary road cabin and admired its "big iron range, plenty of cooking utensils, dishes, two spring cots and mattresses, and wall-to-wall plank floor."
"I turned around," recalled Pearson many years later, "and said, Welcome to the Waldorf."
Winn replied, "This luxury is going to spoil us. Good thing we are only here for one night."
