Golden Oak in Lake Buena Vista in Orange County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
The Eagle and the Beaver
At the top of this totem you will find the story of a young boy who saves an eagle from a fishing net. Years later the boy becomes thief of his tribe, and during a time of famine he comes across, the eagle once more. The eagle brings the hungry chief a salmon, then larger game like seal and porpoise, and eventually a whale. The fable is one of kindness, - that one good turn deserves another.
Below is the tale of group of young people who wreck a beaver family's dam as a joke. The beavers then build a larger dam, which floods half of the neighboring village. Afterwards, one of the young men sees a beaver emerge from the lake and slap his tail on top of the water. He then comes to realize that we should treat all creatures with respect.
The totem pole was hand-carved by Tsimshian artisan David Boxley
