Charles Montagu Dammers
Riverside's Butterfly Man
Whereas butterflies uplift many with their beauty, they became a life consuming passion for Charles Dammers.
A former WW I British sea captain with only a grammar school education, Dammers bought a failing citrus grove at this location in 1921 and made it successful.
Dammers also became a self-educated expert in insect taxonomy, life cycles, and illustration. Several butterflies and other insects are named for him.
Dammers created the drawing to the left showing him next to a tree with butterflies at all stages of development.
