In for the Long Haul
"We have achieved nothing short of a miracle through solidarity."
A. Philip Randolph, activist and union leader
After decades of efforts by the Pullman Company to thwart organized labor, in 1925 porters formed the nation's first African Americanled union: the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Their demands included higher wages, better working conditions and greater economic security. Their solidarity forged a path to the civil rights achievements of the 20th century.
