Mowry Beach Preserve offers 48-acres of convenient public access to one of the easternmost sandy beaches in the country. Situated along the edge of the village of Lubec, this property protects 1,800 feet of shoreline along a 1.2 mile beach overlooking Lubec Channel and Campobello Island. Within the inland portion of the preserve, a 1,700 foot wooden boardwalk passes through coastal-scrub woodland. Along the lower portions of the beach at low tide, the remains of ancient tree stumps can be seen indicating the location of a primeval forest. We hope you enjoy your visit!

Downeast Coastal Conservancy has roots in Washington County going back to 1987: DCC's members have conserved over 6,200 acres in coastal Washington County, including over 60 miles of ocean, river and lake shoreline. In addition to conserving land, DCC provides outdoor education and opportunities for outdoor recreation, including hiking, snowshoeing, paddling, birding, photography, hunting and fishing.

Preserve History & Ecology
Mowry Beach Preserve was acquired by the Quoddy Regional Land Trust (Downeast Coastal Conservancy's predecessor) in 2004. Prior to acquisition, the land that now makes up this property saw many uses, including use as a pasture field, a commercial cranberry

bog, and even a location for a traveling circus. Along southern sections of the beach, a "drowned forest” can be observed. As the tide moves out to sea, multiple tree stumps become exposed. In 1994, a 54-foot finback whale washed ashore on the beaches of the property. To dispose of the carcass, the whale was buried beneath the sand. Twenty years later, volunteers from the local community and the University of Maine at Machias exhumed portions of the whale to preserve and assemble its skeleton.

Downeast Coastal Conservancy's mission is to conserve essential ecological habitats, engage the local community, and foster an environment where wildlife and people thrive in coastal Washington County, Maine.

The 1,800 feet of sandy beaches and dunes conserved at Mowry Beach Preserve are not typical of Washington County's coastline and provide unique marine and wildlife habitats. The shoreline is home to multiple shorebird, waterfowl, and shellfish species. Some species of shorebirds observed at Mowry Beach include red knot, roseate tern, and several species of sandpiper. Within the interior of the property is a large freshwater shrub-scrub. wetland which empties into the intertidal zone. The wetland provides essential cover and forage for a variety of mammal, songbird, amphibian, and reptile species. Take a walk on the 1,700-foot boardwalk and keep
