This outdoor exhibition represents the period from 1750 through 1850-a century of critical change in Haudenosaunee history and culture-with historic buildings, gardens, and indigenous plants from the Otsego Lake region. This exhibit was inspired by the masterpieces in the Eugene and Clare Thaw Collection of American Indian Art on view in the Fenimore Art Museum. Included in the collection are works by Haudenosaunee artists which were created and used in an environment similar to the one you see here.

The Haudenosaunee homeland encompasses most of modern-day Upstate New York. The Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy inhabited this region as they pursued trade and diplomacy among themselves, other Native peoples, and European settlers. Today, the center of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy is in Onondaga territory and many of its members live throughout North America.

Many Haudenosaunee have made important contributions to American politics and culture. Joseph Brant (1742-1807) was a great Mohawk leader. Lieutenant Colonel Ely S. Parker (1828-1895), Seneca, was assistant to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox and penned the terms of General Robert E. Lee's surrender. Joanne Shenandoah (1958-2021) was a Grammy Award-winning artist from the Oneida Nation.
