Sunday Sailing Party c. 1900. Wiscasset, Maine. , It was a summer Sunday C. 1900. A group of friends sit playfully on the bow of a large yacht, having fun even before they set sail., Eliza (Mrs. Sol) Holbrook, Nina Rundlett, and Fred Lennox are seated on the deck of a sailboat near Whaleship Wharf, with Helen McLaughlin and Mamie Baylor Hubbard standing behind them. Elizabeth Neal Tucker and Joe Tucker are sitting in the stern. Docked behind them is a ship from the Eastern Steamship Co. Steamships made regular trips between Boston, Wiscasset, Bath, Boothbay and other points along the coast. They ran for about 40 years and were the preferred way to travel for many city dwellers who summered here., Whaleship Wharf was built for the Wiscasset Whale Fishing Company in 1834. They sent the ship Wiscasset, under the command of Captain Richard Macy of Nantucket, on two successful voyages to the Pacific. In 1848, that same ship, under different ownership, carried Andrew Carnegie and his family from Glasgow, Scotland to New York City on their way to a new life in Pennsylvania., Today, concerts are held here. This is where the 4th of July parade ends with fireworks. It is a working waterfront, just as it always has been, and the place where yachting parties still cross the river on a sunny Sunday.
