1. Motif Benches. Schwetzingen
Anyone who wants to learn something about the town's history in Schwetzingen can do so at their leisure - from bench to bench! The first themed benches were set up for the town's anniversary in 2016. From a one-off "try-it-out", the benches have now developed into a unique tourist attraction. Historical hotspots, such as Schwetzingen's importance as a brewing, tobacco and asparagus town, are addressed here, as are contributions to archaeology, music and mobility history. The great success of this "storytelling project" has led to 40 themed benches now adorning the townscape.(Submitted on October 22, 2024, by James Hulse of Medina, Texas.)
The creative designs were created by graphic designer Klaus Peter Deimann.
2. Bertha Benz. Wikipedia
On 5 August 1888, 39-year-old Bertha Benz drove from Mannheim to Pforzheim with her sons Richard and Eugen, thirteen and fifteen years old respectively, in a Model III, without telling her husband and without permission of the authorities, thus becoming the first person to drive an automobile a significant distance. Before this historic trip, motorized drives were merely very short trials, returning to the point of origin, made with assistance of mechanics. Following wagon tracks, this pioneering tour covered a one-way distance of about 106 km (66 mi).(Submitted on October 24, 2024, by James Hulse of Medina, Texas.)
