Inscription. New Amsterdam businessman and explorer, Jan Peeck, arrived at what is now Annsville Creek in about 1650. Here he began a fur trading business with the resident tribes. The area became known as “John Peek's Creek” to the English, and remained “Peek's Kill” (creek or stream) to the Dutch. Jan and his wife, Marie de Trieux, cared for ten children. Jan Peeck was a militiaman, an official translator for Dutch and English merchants, and helped build the wall in New York City for which “Wall Street” is named.
