Monarch Habitat. . The area below you has been prepared as a meadow of milkweed and other wildflowers to attract monarch butterflies. Monarchs have been declining drastically due to various factors, including habitat loss and damage to their wintering grounds in Mexico. The simplest of these threats to address is the availability of milkweek, which is the host plant of monarch caterpillars. Even small patches of milkweed planted by homeowners can have a beneficial impact or this imperiled species. ZooAmericaฎ has participated in a national monarch wing tagging effort since 2018, designed to study their migration across the country.
