Suezzo
Merovingian Clan
The name of the settlement site of Suezzingen, which belongs to the Suezzo clan, goes back to the Merovingian period. Excavations have uncovered richly furnished graves, the oldest of which date back to the first third of the 6th century, and in the 1770s the first graves were discovered on the north-western periphery of the palace gardens. Further excavations took place in the 1960s and 1980s in the adjacent so-called Kleiner Feld and in Linderstralle. High-quality grave goods such as weapons, horse harness, jewelry, combs and goat slings were secured in a total of 70 graves that were excavated. Valuable finds such as the disc of an adorant rescuer and the rich array of weapons indicate that the settlement was purely socially higher-ranking people within a military base. The more recent finds already show Christian motifs.
