A Favorite Widow
Captain Edward Robinson owned the large house to the west of the Academy. The side porch was removed in the mid-1980s. He was a ship builder who began his career at sea at age ten. Master of a small vessel at nineteen, he captained a large square-rigger by age twenty-two. Following the death of Rep. Jonathan Cilley, Captain Robinson was elected to complete Cilley's term in the United States Congress.
The street to the east of the house was named Robinson Street to honor the captain's widow, Penelope Fales Robinson, a much-loved lady who lived a very long and active life. For many years, local people called the street Penelope Lane thinking the name should have been that so as not to be thought that it honored the captain instead of his fourth wife.
