1. Downy Hawthorn Marker
Inscription. Also called red haw, this small tree was common along fencerows and in old pastures. It will also grow as an understory tree in open oak woods. The small apple-like fruits are edible and were used by Native Americans and early pioneers. The hairy, or downy leaves are often dotted with a rusty-colored fungus.
