1. Bur Oak Marker
Inscription. Bur oak is the iconic tree of the Midwestern prairies and oak savannas. They were able to survive the frequent prairie fires due to their thick, corky bark, which protected the trees. They are sun-loving trees and attained their greatest size in the sunny, open savannas. They are adaptable to both sandy soils, heavy clay soils, and even wet soils. For this reason, they are also hardy urban street trees. The acorns are enclosed in fringed cups.

Erected by Spring Valley Nature Club.
