Louis Joinet, born May 26, 1934 in Nevers and died September 22, 2019 in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, is a French magistrate, independent expert with the UN Human Rights Committee. He founded the Syndicat de la magistrature, a left-wing union, in 1968.(Submitted on November 13, 2024.)
In 1997, he authored the principles against impunity for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, also known as the "Joinet principles", which are part of the principles of transitional justice. The "Joinet principles" are principles for combating impunity for human rights violations. They are divided into three pillars: the right to know the truth for victims of violations, the right to justice and the right to reparations for the same victims.
