1. Agriculture Marker
By the 1820s, cotton production in the Deep South had begun to dominate the market, leaving Virginia farmers behind. Unable to see the larger economic storm, Monroe laid blame at the feet of his overseers. The 1828 sale of Monroe's slaves to a cotton plantation, Casa Bianca, in Florida illustrates Highland's involvement in the national economic trend.
