Inscription. Archaeological investigations in 2014 revealed buried architectural debris in this area, which led to the discovery of well-preserved stone foundations. Further research identified these as the remains of the Monroes' main house.

Artifacts uncovered during excavation revealed evidence of burning. No contemporary account exists of the fire, and by the mid-1900s all memory of the true 1799 main house had been lost.
