Inscription.
Fishing below the falls has always been a popular past-time. Oldtimers atest that the old bamboo pole, a staple in all hardware stores, a piece of linen line, a hook and a minnow produced lovely catches of Walleye. The first nations had long utilized the site known for the monstrous sturgeon that inhabited the area. The fall fishing was done at the spawning grounds and white fish were easily caught at that time.

1804 — Hugh Fairies, Clerk North West Company Rainy Lake Post
“October 11th — men sent to the Chaudiere to catch White Fish... the men, that are fishing there...are...very successful, there being plenty of white fish... The men at the Chaudiere had caught 1100 white fish...50 sturgeon.”
