Inscription. Mud sleds were designed to navigate the difficult and muddy terrain of the swamps while carrying heavy loads of timber. The sleds had two sets of white oak and metal runners, one set for the front and another for the back, and a chain or pole connecting the two sections. This design helped to support the heavy loads on both ends and made it easier to turn. A single mud sled could carry dozens of logs at a time in the right conditions.

Logging sleds were originally designed to go through snow, but were modified for muddy conditions in the Great Black Swamp region. This is when removal of the trees and the use of tiles began for draining the area and turning it into farmland. By the end of the 1800s the swamp, once 1,500 square miles, was nearly gone.
