Enlisted April 18, 1861, at 26 years old,
writing his name on Capt. Mason's enlistment form

At the East Troy Encampment in May, before being
mustered into Co. F of the 34th Penn., he became ill
and died within two weeks, never actually having
become a soldier. He was the county's first
citizen-soldier to die during the Civil War.
