St. Augustine in St. Johns County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
Governor’s House
Archaeological excavations in 1993 in the courtyard unearthed pottery, an 18th century guardhouse, and a late 17th century barrel well. Evidence of a coquina stone columns at the four corners of the well suggested pillars that supported a roof over the well.
Today's architectural appearance and ornate balcony, viewed from the colonial plaza, were inspired by a 1764 watercolor painting, now in the British Library.
Reconstructed from 1935 to 1937 with Works Progress Administration funds; deemed an historic restoration by the U.S. Treasury Office.
Governor's House lies within the St. Augustine Town Plan National Historic Landmark, designated by the Secretary of the Interior in 1970.
