Inscription. The ridge you see along the opposite bank of Salt Creek was put there 10,000 years ago by the Wisconsin Glacier.

Near the end of the Ice Age, the Wisconsin Glacier expanded south and west into northern Illinois, pushing rock and soil along its leading edge like a mile-high bulldozer.

The glacier grew and shrunk several times over the centuries, reshaping the landscape with every wave. Its final retreat left behind ridges of land called "moraines," such as the Tinley Moraine here along Salt Creek.

Spotlight
The large boulders here at Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve are called "glacial erratics." The Wisconsin Glacier carried them from the the north and east as it spread and dropped them here when it finally receded. Many at the forest preserve are granite from Michigan and Canada.
