To the present day, life in the region has been very much affected by its geological evolution and the landscape forming properties of the Rhine and Mosel rivers. The bedrock consists of 350 to 400 million year-old slates and greywackes. The Mosel delta only formed toward

the end of the last ice age, about 10,000 years ago. The area adjacent to the St. Kastor Basilica belongs to the so-called Niederterrasse, or lower Rhine terrace. The settlement area near the mouth of the Mosel was originally quite marshy with islands protruding between old and dead river arms. The early settlers chose to dwell on the highest and thus drier parts. But after river- and bank adjustments in the late 19th century, these wetlands were drained, filled, and leveled. Subsequently, the modern city spread onto this newly available land.
