along the roads near the Rhine. An Augustan period castellum was located right next to the later Kastor Basilica. From here the Romans controlled the Mosel confluence as well as the Rhine bridge built in 49 A.D. and oversaw an entire sector of this important trade route. Later, the castellum was abandoned in favor of that at Niederberg on the right bank of the Rhine. As a limes castellum, it secured the border segment right up to the river Lahn. Until the early 5th century, a military complex occupied the spur at the Ehrenbreitstein and was given great. strategic importance. Gradually, settlement activity shifted from Rhine to Mosel and into the area of today's old city centre. Around 370 A.D. a solid, fortified ring wall was built around the town.
