died after New York City Police Department officer Daniel Pantaleo placed him in a prohibited chokehold during an arrest in Tompkinsville, Staten Island. Garner's death, ruled a homicide by the medical examiner, sparked nationwide protests and criticism of police use of force, with "I can't breathe" becoming a rallying cry. A grand jury declined to indict Pantaleo in 2014, leading to further demonstrations, and the Garner family later reached a $5.9 million settlement with the City of New York. Pantaleo was fired in 2019 following an administrative judge's recommendation, five years after the incident. (Submitted on January 21, 2025.)
