Margaret Carnegie and Mildred Johnson. . This building honors public housing leaders Margaret Carnegie and Mildred Johnson who represented Cooper Park Houses at the Greenpoint Renaissance Enterprise Corporation (GREC) and bridging the differences between race, class and ethnicity in Brooklyn. In 1953, both women moved into Cooper Park Houses, where they became deeply involved in the Greenpoint-Williamsburg community. As founding members of the Cooper Park Tenants Association, they achieved improvements in safety and the creation of New community spaces. Their commitment to social justice and community development was reflected in their involvement in organizations such a as the National Congress of Neighborhood Women (NCNW) and GREC. Mildred, a devout worshiper, channeled her faith into the community by establishing youth and head start programs. When the Greenpoint Hospital was converted into a homeless shelter, she fought to assure the homeless were treated with justice and respect. Margaret had a special interest in seniors' rights. She created the senior center at Cooper Park Houses. Her work was recognized through the re-naming of a section of Kingsland Avenue as Grandparents Avenue. The playground at Cooper Park is named in her honor.
