1. Mary Alice Richardson & Geraldine Miller Community Room Marker
The Neighborhood Women Houses' community room honors activists Mary Alice Richardson and Geraldine Miller for their key role as grassroots women leaders. Mary Alice was president of Neighborhood Women Williamsburg-Greenpoint and pioneered work in economic development as the first director of a Community Action Program in the 1960s. Her leadership resulted in the creation of the first women's political party in Williamsburg-Greenpoint. Also a leader in Lindsay Park Park Houses, she was appreciated for her ability to facilitate connections between people across class, race and ethnicity.
Geraldine founded the Household Technicians Union in 1971 to ensure equal rights for women working as maids, nannies and cooks. She was president of the National Congress of Neighborhood Women where she ran a project in the Bronx as part of Project Open Doors. This brought to light similarities and shared concerns of homemakers and household workers, breaking down the barriers of class and race. Both women were members of the Neighborhood Women Renaissance Houses (NWRH) board, which led Mary Alice to work tirelessly with architect Katrin Adams to rehab the Greenpoint Hospital into the NWRH.
Erected by Neighborhood Women Legacy Project.
