Inscription. The first settlers were the Moore family: William, Charlotte, and their three sons, who came from Georgia in the late 1860s. They had 360 acres of land, but life was hard, and their three sons, who came from Georgia in the late 1860s. They had 360 acres of land, but life was hard, and two eldest sons moved back to Georgia. Newton, the youngest, and his parents spent the rest of their lives at Ethel.

William and Newton continued to acquire land as other homesteaders joined them. Most were farmers growing crops for their families and for sale locally. They also raised cattle and pigs and some planted orange groves. The town also had its craftsmen, such as carpenters, machinists, ferrymen and wood cutters.

Artist Gary Schermerhorn's illustration of some of the structures at Ethel compressed into a single sketch. It is an artistic interpretation as we have no way of knowing what Ethel really looked like, but it is based on images that we do have.
