More about this marker. The Marker was placed adjacent to Augusta Yates' grave in 2010 by the Anne Eliza Johns Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The UDC placed the Marker to correct the misspelling of Yates' name on her tombstone and to memorialize her historical role in founding the Ladies' Memorial Association which commissioned the Danville Civil War Monument located in Green Hill Cemetery, where Yates' grave is also located.
Regarding Augusta Yates. Augusta Yates founded several civic organizations, including the Wednesday Club and Ladies' Memorial Association which became the Anne Eliza Johns Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, both of which still meet as of 2025. Her tombstone incorrectly credits her with having also founded the Shakespeare Study Club.
