Indigenous Peoples
Native American communities, including the Nacotchtank, Doeg and Algonquian speaking members of the Powhatan Confederacy, inhabited this area for at least 12,000 years before European settlers arrived. When John Smith began the settler incursion of this land in 1608, he recorded the location of the Nacotchtank town of Nameroughquena somewhere in this area. The Nacotchtank lived on both sides of the Potomac River, which they used for fishing and trading between towns. The European invaders would anglicize the Nacotchtank name to 'Necostin' and 'Anacostin.'"
African American Communities
After their eviction from Freedmen's Village by the Federal Government, many African American families settled in the Queen City subdivision of East Arlington. In a time of segregation and oppression, the neighbors in Queen City built a successful and close-knit network, including churches, barbers, seamstresses, a general store, a gas station and its own trolley stop. In 1941, the Federal Government seized the land for development. Queen City is now buried under the Pentagon parking lot and highway ramp system.
