1. Ping Tom Memorial Park Marker
Inscription. Ping Tom Memorial Park was dedicated on October 2, 1999. The design was inspired by traditional Chinese gardens in Suzhou, China, with pathways to link defined spaces that mimic courtyards. The park features a pagoda-style pavilion, four dragon gateway columns, and Taihu limestone rocks from the foot of the Dongting Mountain in Suzhou, as well as gingko trees and bamboo.

The Ping Tom Memorial Park Advisory Council would like to acknowledge the following who contributed to the creation of the park: Ping Tom, Raymond Lee, Leonard Louie, Gene Lee, and Ernest Wong of site design group, ltd.

Ping Tom Memorial Park sits on land that previously served as a Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad yard on the edge of the Chicago River. The land was acquired by the Chicago Park District in 1991, and the park was dedicated in 1999 in honor of the late Ping Tom, a local business leader who helped drive its creation. Today the park covers 17 acres and includes four boathouses.

Excerpt: "The Chicago Park District acquired the site for Ping Tom Memorial Park in 1991. For years, its surrounding Chinatown community had suffered a total lack of open space and recreational facilities. The only nearby parks, Hardin Square and Stanford Park, had been demolished 30 years earlier to make way for the Dan Ryan Expressway. Two full generations of children in Chinatown grew up without access to a neighborhood park or any recreational area."
