Hemenway
This tree has been home to countless raptors and wading birds over the centuries. You can see it is sprinkled with bromeliads and blanketed by resurrection fern; scaled by Virginia creeper and a strangler fig; weathered, hollowed, and worn by storms and drought. This unique tree is home to many Sanctuary residents that play a vital role in the life cycles of the swamp.
The Hemenway tree shaded the earliest visitors to Corkscrew's boardwalk, which was originally constructed in 1956.
Harriet Hemenway
Boston conservationist Harriet Hemenway (1858-1960) led the movement to end the fashion of wearing decorative birds and feathers on hats and clothing. She helped convince lawmakers to pass the Lacey Act of 1900, which restricted trade in wild animals. Hemenway and the National Audubon Society promoted the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, one of the strongest laws protecting wild birds to this day.
Along the boardwalk, remarkable bald cypress trees are designated as "Landmark Cypress." With these trees as ambassadors, our Landmark Cypress Program tells the story of Florida's natural history and conservation, while recognizing philanthropists who continue to help Audubon safeguard this special place today.
