1. Sweat & Sawdust Life at the Mill Marker
The mill was the focal point of an industrial complex of buildings, farm fields, and livestock that likely contained an overseer's house, a sawyer's house, slave houses, a kitchen building, a carpenter and blacksmith shop, and wagon and log cart sheds, among other structures. Stacks of rough and sawn lumber, vegetable gardens, grain fields, and mule and oxen pens also would have been seen. Chickens, pigs, and milk cows provided food for the paid workers, slaves, and their families. Groups of workers cut down trees by hand and hauled the logs to the mill using large wheeled carts pulled by mules and oxen. After the logs were sawn into boards at the mill, they were stacked to dry and readied for shipment to St. Augustine by wagon or possibly boat.
