1. The Erie Canal in Clyde Marker

Inscription. Clyde is about half-way between Rochester and Syracuse on the Erie Canal. A village grew here on the banks of the Clyde River, nestled in a swarm of oblong glacial hills called drumlins.

The rolling country around here is excellent farmland. Farmers hauled their grain and other produce to Clyde, where it was processed and shipped to market on the canal and later via railroad.

Originally, the Erie Canal ran through the middle of the village. When it was enlarged to the village. When it was enlarged to its present dimensions in 1915, the channel was moved south into the bed of the Clyde River.
