1. Lake Walk Marker
Water and Connemara are synonymous.
The region is named after an ancient tribe Conmacne Mara, the '
Mountain lakes and streams feed into the three large lakes of Kylemore Valley. The largest lake is Kylemore Lake, followed by Pollacappal (the lake in front of Kylemore Abbey) and Lough Maladrolaun. The Victorian Walled Garden is irrigated by Lough Tougher, situated just above the garden.
Lough Tougher was used to generate electricity in Kylemore Castle in 1893. Engineers from J.G. Howell of London designed and installed the hydro-electrical system in a small powerhouse west of the castle. We hope to reinstate hydropower in the near future to avail of sustainable green energy.

The Kylemore Estate is home to a herd of Connemara ponies. These ponies are native to the Connemara region but can now be found all over the World. All ponies born on the Estate carry the prefix "Peaceful" as part of their name. Learn more

The Legend of the White Horse

Maybe this legend was inspired by water sprouts [sic - spouts] that sometimes appear during storms.
European Eel -
Opposite to the salmon, eels are born in the ocean and migrate to freshwater. When grown into adult, they swim back to the sea to spawn. Early 19th-century research revealed that European eels reproduce in the Saragossa Sea, a calm part of the Atlantic Ocean.
