Leaving France
Politics in France prompted the du Ponts to look for a future elsewhere. Economic opportunities in the United States enticed the du Ponts to the new nation. Politicians and business leaders who knew Pierre Samuel and Victor further encouraged the family to look towards the new republic across the Atlantic.

In 1799, after two years of planning, the du Pont family made their way to the United States. They expected their journey to take a month. It took three.

Arriving in America
The du Ponts spotted the American coast on January 1, 1800, just off Newport, Rhode Island. They made their way to Bon Sejour, or "Goodstay," a home at Bergen Point, New Jersey. From there they established Pierre Samuel du Pont Nemours Father & Sons & Company of New York. They had the support of leading figures including Pierre Samuel's acquaintance Thoams Jefferson and former Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton.
